Craft beers open up whole new horizons in beer enjoyment that were previously not available to most British beer lovers. This is not because the know how or the ingredients were not available but because British brewers, on the whole, constrain themselves around traditional brewing techniques and find themselves delivering beers that don’t significantly differ in flavour and character from much of what has been before.

American craft brewers, however, have no rule book to work from. Borne out of a backlash against standard, homogeneous American beers (the names of which we all know but need not speak) these brewers decided to once more challenge the taste buds of their drinkers.

Not satisfied with pallid mediocrity, craft brewers will throw down the gauntlet with their products and put beers out that you could never have imagined. Whether a double hopped India Pale Ale, a Russian Imperial Stout emboldened with real cocoa or a summer Hefeweizen with enhanced flavours of orange peel, spice and coriander, American craft brewers recognize that the biggest insult you could ever make to their product is to say ‘it’s alright I suppose’.

So be prepared to enjoy beers made with smoked hickory, coffee, honey, spruce bark, cocoa, clove, wheat, fruit and even bread. Just be prepared to say ‘now that is interesting’ (but not in that sarcastic way you say it when someone serves you a dessert at a dinner party that tastes like boiled concrete).
